Cahokia Mounds

One must-see place in the St Louis area is the ancient and historical Cahokia Mounds. The Cahokia mounds used to be one of the greatest cities of its time from 700 to 1400 AD and some of its remains are open to the public. It is thought to have homed up to 20,000 people and was six square miles large. I have been to the mounds as recent as last semester just to check it out because my mother used to take us there when we were kids. The most popular thing to visit is Monks Mound which is the main mound and is over one hundred feet high. The stairs on the giant hill have been repaired to concrete so climbing is much easier now. It takes awhle to get to the top but once you are up there you can see for miles. It is a very interesting place to visit.

in 1982 the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) made Cahokia Mounds a World Heritage Site because of its great prehistory of America. It is also a National Historical Landmark and is managed as a State Historic Site by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

The Cahokia Mounds also has a museum called the Interpretive Center. In here you can see ancient artifacts found on the site and much more. They provide maps and tour guides if interested. Cameras and video are allowed too so bring the whole fam. Cahokia Mounds are located off of Interstate 70 and located in Collinsville, Illinois not Cahokia, illinois. It is just a five to ten minute drive East from St Louis.
